How to keep staff engaged and motivated
Having motivated and engaged employees increases productivity and reduces staff turnover in the workplace.
What can employers do to help keep their staff happy? We look at top tips for engaging and motivating staff, all of which could be the difference between a successful company and an unsuccessful one.
Remember your manners
Saying “hello” to employees when you get to work as well as saying “please” and “thank you” carry a lot of weight when it comes to making people feel valued, so never underestimate the power of good manners.
Workers need to feel like they can approach management whenever and wherever. A boss who interacts with their staff is deemed more approachable and while doing so makes employees feel more valued.
Give praise when it’s due
Another way to make employees feel valued is to praise them when they’ve done something good at work. No matter how small the achievement, a bit of positive reinforcement can go an extremely long way.
You could pull them aside for a quiet word, or single them out in a staff meeting in front of everyone. Just be careful of doing the latter, as other employees could feel jealousy towards the person being praised.
Hand out rewards
Of course, nothing says well done more than a reward. A financial bonus is one of the best ways – if not the best way – to engage and motivate staff, acknowledging all their hard work and effort with a cheque.
But what if you can’t afford to hand out big cheques? Don’t worry, other non-financial rewards work just as well. You could hand out vouchers or simply organise an employee of the month award.
Incentive programs – whereby you offer a reward to promote or encourage good work – are also worth considering.
People left in the dark tend to become disinterested quickly. You should therefore find a way to get all of your employees involved in the planning and decision-making process of a project, even if it’s only a small role.
Ask for their input and use their ideas, wherever possible. This will mean they have a vested interest in seeing the project succeed. Furthermore, it opens the door to new and more productive ways of working.
Everyone needs to let off some steam once in a while, including your employees, so organise social events outside of the office so your team can let their hair down and forget about work for a few hours.
Such events show you care about your employees, plus help to build team camaraderie moving forward. You could also encourage fun in the workplace by providing games in the staff room or organising fancy dress days.
Provide great benefits
Benefits are hugely important to keeping employees engaged and motivated. They are completely separate to rewards, so don’t go confusing the two. Think generous holiday policies or sick pay packages.
Things like paid parking or free lunches work wonders as well, especially if you have a limited budget to play with. Ongoing training is also crucial to staff contentment. If you invest in your staff, they will invest in you.
