Employees in shared and serviced offices throughout the country could become fitter by catching the bus, as research finds those who commute by bus walk nearly 300 miles per year.

This is compared to those who drive to work and is an average of 0.8 miles per day out of 400 journeys by public transport across Britain which the study looked at.

The walking is that done between bus stops and employee’s homes or offices and leads to an improvement in their overall fitness, which is important as the number of obese people in the UK has nearly tripled since 1980.

Meanwhile respondents to the IBM’s Commuter Pain Index have said that traffic in some of the world’s most economically important cities in the world has improved over the past three years.

Dr David Lewis, who carried out the study, said: “Someone who travels by bus daily will walk almost 460km (286 miles) per year. That is the equivalent of walking 11 marathons.”
