        Reading Area Guide

        Reading is a one of the busiest towns in Berkshire, with a very good shopping centre offering a great choice of shops covering all age groups.

        It has the benefit of a  direct rail link to London Paddington (28 mins), one of Britain’s largest and busiest railways in one direction and in the other you can go direct to Bristol (55 mins).

        The Heathrow Express coach service goes direct to the airport leaving Reading Station every 30 minutes. The M4 junction 11 is a 10 minute car journey away connecting you to London, Slough, Bracknell or west to Bristol and Wales.

        Reading  is also know as a University Town with The University of Reading being ranked as one of the UK’s 10 most research-intensive universities and as one of the top 200 universities in the world, enjoying a world-class reputation for teaching, research and enterprise. Established as an extension college of Christ Church, Oxford in 1892, they received a Royal Charter in 1926, the only university to do so between the two world wars. Important achievements include being the first university to win the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement (1989) and twice receiving the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education (1998 and 2006).

        Reading Local Attractions

        Forbury Gardens

        The highlight of this is a statue of a lion famed for its feet both pointing in the same direction. The person who made this statue realized he had made a mistake, climbed to the top and jumped off killing himself.

        Reading Festival

        This happens once a year and began in the late 1960’s it has now become a main attraction and is one of the largest Rock and Jazz Festivals in the south of England. In 2010 instead of people taking home their belonging, it was decided that the festival goers would burn their belongings. Unfortunately it did not stop there as some people decided to burn other people’s as well.

        The Museum of Reading

        Access to the museums is at the front of the Town Hall building just a 2 minute walk from the centre.

        Reading Football Club

        Was set up in 1871 at Reading Recreation Ground after being moved several times it came to the Madejski stadium in 1998. John Madejski a well known business man in Reading became chairman/ owner of the club. The club has had many twists and turns being promoted to the Premier division and then unfortunately were relegated 2 seasons later.
