Employees who are under extreme amounts of pressure must be offered support from managers, Right Corecare has said.

The employee assistance programme provider said that managers need to recognise that their staff can become “burnt out” during periods of great stress, and they need to be on hand to prevent that from happening.

Kevin Friery, clinical director at the organisation, said: “One of the things that happens is that in times of pressure, people sometimes think they better work all the hours available to get some money because they are not sure where the next pay check is coming from. If people have access to support they are far more likely to come out with a helpful solution to what they are facing than if they are sitting stewing at home and losing all sense of perspective.”

He was speaking following the release of good practice guidelines for people assessing psychological risk in the workplace. The guidance was put together by the British Standards Agency.
