Interns are extremely valuable to businesses in so many ways, according to the Forum of Private Business (FPB).

While internships at businesses operating in serviced offices and other accommodation are often viewed as a significant addition to the CVs of people looking for permanent work, businesses often overlook the value they provide to the company.

Phil McCabe, spokesman for the FPB, said that interns can bring “freshness, youth, enthusiasm and ideas”.

Although interns aren’t technically classed as staff, there are financial considerations to bear in mind – travel and food expenses – which can put businesses off.

Mr McCabe added: “Any kind of increase in employee costs is going to make a small business think twice about taking on employees and I think that is a shame, whether that is interns or otherwise.

“Compared to the more senior staffing decisions, it will be less of a concern, but it is still there obviously. Any kind of additional cost is an issue.”

The FPB fights for fair treatment of private businesses by decision-makers and supports the profitable growth of members.
