Those who commute to the office by car, train or bus are more likely to experience stress or exhaustion than those who walk or cycle.

This is according to research carried out by scientists from Lund University in Sweden of 12,000 employees between the ages of 18 and 65.

It also found that the longer the journey the more negative the impact on commuters using public transport.

The average commute for workers in the UK is 54 minutes a day, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Meanwhile commuters in Chicago were treated to a trained decked out with plants, grass and flowers in order to help distress them for one day only.

Erik Hansson, researcher on the study, said: “Generally car and public transport users suffered more everyday stress, poorer sleep quality, exhaustion and, on a seven point scale, felt that they struggled with their health compared to the active commuters.”
