Office staff could increase their productivity and improve their health by building exercise into their work day a study by Stockholm University and Karolinska Institute has found.

The study showed that when staff spent work time doing exercise and other health related activities they still managed to maintain the same amount of work achieved or increase the amount in the remaining time.

Those who carried out the exercise also said they saw an improvement in their self-assessed productivity, with more work achieved, a greater work capacity and fewer sick days.

Exercise can be added into an employee’s day just by walking to work or taking a brisk walk during a lunch break, which should help them feel more energised.

Ulrica von Thiele Schwarz, a researcher on the study, said: “This increased productivity comes , on the one hand, from people getting more done during the hours they are at work, perhaps because of increased stamina and, on the other hand, from less absenteeism owing to sickness.”
