Education is the key to helping offices to reduce their energy consumption, according to the British Council for Offices.

Paul Edwards, head of sustainability at the organisation, said it was a case of making sure that everybody was up to speed with what could and should be done to make the building more eco-friendly.

He added: “If you educate your staff, and if the building owners educate the agents that run it and their tenants, you can bring them up to speed on what they can or can’t do. There are a lot of studies around that say you can save anything between ten and 20 per cent of energy purely on behavioural elements.”

Mr Edwards also suggested that employers should get people in the workplace to turn off lights, switch off computers and printers and turn off machinery and equipment which do not need to be turned on.

Overnight, when nobody is using the building, there should be little energy used, he added.

These comments were made in advance of World Environment Day, on June 5th, when offices were urged to do their bit for the planet.
