We are inviting employees and clients to each take three positive eco-friendly steps to help mark World Environment Day on Thursday 5th June 2014.
The United Nations’ World Environment Day (WED) is a red letter day in its calendar and the primary conduit for inspiring global awareness and positive action to help the environment.
Over the last 14 years, World Environment Day has developed to be a far-reaching international platform for community outreach that has been embraced by participants in more than 100 countries. It serves also as a day of action for the people, collectively making a positive impact on the environment, stimulating small personal actions into a combined power that engenders a magnified positive influence on the planet.
Every Action Counts
World Environment Day is an opportunity for us all to become agents of change and to accept that we all have a responsibility to care for the planet. Business Environment is encouraging employees and clients alike to embrace the world event and take three or more positive steps to do their bit.
Here are some simple steps you can take:
- Switch off your computer monitor at lunch time
- Use the stairs instead of the lift
- If the natural light in your office is sufficient then switch off the lights
- Think about your commute to work, cycle or walk rather than drive
- If you have to print, set your printer default to double-sided
The theme for World Environment Day this year is “Raise your voice, not the sea levels” in recognition of the UN designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Islands and Developing States (SIDS). The intention is to inspire a greater understanding of the mounting risks to small islands and the need to protect these vulnerable islands.
Speaking at the launch of the 2014 International Year of Small Islands and Developing States, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said:
“Planet Earth is our shared island, let us join forces to protect it.”
