Businesses operating in serviced offices and other buildings have been warned not to neglect the health and safety of their home-based workers.
Bar Huberman, employment law editor at XpertHR, said employees who worked from home were entitled to the same “due diligence” as those based in the employer’s premises.
Furthermore, Ms Huberman went so far as to suggest they were entitled to a health and safety inspection in their homes.
She said: “Some employers consider that if an employee works from then health and safety isn’t their responsibility, but this is a myth.
“Employers’ home workers have almost the same legal protection as those working from the employer’s premises and regulations require the employer to conduct an assessment of the risks to health and safety to which they are exposed while at work.”
