Flexible working taken to the extreme


It has been said many times recently that advances in technology mean that office employees can now work from anywhere and one man has tested that theory.

Casper Mason of PD3 spent a day working from his desk suspended 20 feet above the street below in order to show just how flexible mobile working could be, reports the Hackney Gazette.

He undertook the experiment in response to a challenge issued by O2 communications, who also decided about which street he was dangled.

It chose to have Mr Mason suspended in the area close to Old Street’s Silicon Roundabout, as it is a growing business community expanding fast enough to rival any in the capital.

The mobile phone firm maintains that given the right technology an office worker can in fact work from anywhere and it appears Mr Mason’s example has proved this.

He tweeted: “It’s been chilly. Gone well tho looking forward to not dangling.”

According to O2 the benefits of flexible and mobile working include cheaper rental costs and bills for businesses as they do not have to accommodate as many staff into office space.

Mr Mason’s desk, complete with his laptop, family picture and stuffed dog mascot were suspended from a building using steel cables.

He was also fitted with a safety harness in order to avoid his attention grabbing stunt from making the headlines for the wrong reasons.

O2 recently held a mobile working day in which it encouraged its entire staff to carry out their jobs away from the office.

This was a practice run for the Olympics when it is predicted many businesses will need to adopt the practice as public transport is expected to be overwhelmed meaning commuters can’t make it into work.

The government has issued advice to companies with regard to this and led by example with Whitehall staff overhauling the ways in which they work this summer.
