People working in the IT and telecoms sector are seeing their pay rise at a higher rate than the average worker, according to new research.

Greythorn, an IT and telecoms recruiter, found that annual salaries for IT staff had risen to £46,000, which was a 7.5 per cent increase on last year’s figures.

Paul Winchester, managing director of Greythorn, said: “Technology services were among the hardest hit during the recession, but, companies are now realising that unless these departments are properly staffed, they face expensive efficiency deficits which hold back growth.”

He added that the increase in salary indicated that the best people were now in high demand as “companies are fighting to get their technology up to scratch”.

According to experts part of the reason for such an increase is a recovery from depressed levels of pay that existed during the recession.

A new report by Gartner has claimed that virtualisation and cloud computing will dominate the majority of companies’ IT spending over the next few years.
