Businesses looking at ways to operate more efficiently and take advantage of the mobile working potential and convenience offered by tablets should consider the features they want alongside budget before selecting the model they require.

With a growing array of sizes, capabilities and price points, there is likely to be the ideal device to suit most business needs. Below are our favourite choices.

          Apple iPad Air

The iPad Air weighs in at just one pound and offers a range of features to suit business and consumer users. It is lighter and faster than its predecessors, as well as providing access to a wide selection of applications and almost 12 hours of battery life – one of the longest on the market.

Considered by many to be the original and still the best of the tablet computers, the iPad Air comes at a premium one would expect to accompany its impressive Retina display and suite of Apple iWork apps.

          Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2

Samsung’s brand new Galaxy Note 12.2 is designed specifically with the business user in mind and comes with the popular S Pen stylus to scribble notes directly onto the pressure-sensitive screen across a range of functions.

An Android tablet, the Galaxy’s Multi-Window Mode is popular with executives for the ability to split the screen and perform multiple tasks. The latest from the Galaxy stable offers a whopping 12.2-inch display and should be coming to UK shores some time soon.

          Microsoft Surface Pro 2

The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is optimised for productivity and offers the same functionality as other Windows machines, including a full version of the Windows 8.1 operating system – as well as tablet features like an active stylus. Its speedy Haswell-based processor delivers improved performance compared with its predecessor.

The Surface Pro 2 also comes with good battery life and a 10.6-inch screen and is designed to provide a device that acts as both a tablet and PC. However, this powerhouse of a tablet is expensive, it is thicker and heavier than some competitors, and peripherals such as the optional docking station add to the price further.

          Google Nexus 7

For those businesses operating on a tight budget, the Nexus comes with a lower price tag than many similar tablets and its most recent incarnation has improved graphics. Manufactured by Asus, it takes its name from the 7-inch screen and is powered by a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.

While it may be lacking in features offered by more expensive models and comes with only a 7-hour battery life, the Nexus 7’s open Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system allows companies to develop custom apps and has an impressively sharp HD screen for the price point.

          Sony Xperia Tablet Z

This Sony Android tablet provides a 10.1-inch display in a beautifully stylish waterproof shell and operates on the same 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system as the Nexus 7.

While it takes a long time to charge and its battery life is relatively low, the Xperia Tablet Z is a stunning ultra-slim and lightweight gadget you can even take into the bath and is comfortable to use and hold for long periods. It also delivers a Micro SD card slot, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, HD display and 10.1-inch display.
