Small business confidence dropped to its lowest ever level at the end of last year thanks to the global financial crisis.

So whether it’s a change of office space or some good news from the coalition government, business owners are in need of a little pick-me-up.

According to John Walker, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, the government has been talking about kick-starting economic growth, but the recent GDP figures seem to fly in the face of that rhetoric.

Mr Walker said: “This year hasn’t started on a positive footing with tax rises, increases in unemployment and GDP entering negative territory.

“Businesses will be looking to hear exactly what growth stimulus political parties plan to put in place to help them do what they know best – grow, innovate and create jobs.”

He claimed that small firms were key to Britain’s economic success, but they need additional support if they are to expand.

His comments come ahead of the FSB annual conference, which will feature a number of keynote speakers including prime minister David Cameron and opposition leader Ed Miliband.
