New research from mobile phone network operator Orange has shown that more people than ever before are working alone.

The firm said that thanks to new flexible working technologies – like virtual office environments and mobile broadband – people are regularly discharging their duties outside the so-called ‘traditional office space’.

Orange said that 46 per cent of people in full-time employment now class themselves as lone workers.

What’s more, 79 per cent of lone workers spend more than half of their time away from the office – thanks, in part, to virtual office environments.

Orange said that we are living in an increasingly connected world, which means working from home and other benefits offered by the virtual office are likely to become more commonplace.

However, the firm said that companies should make sure that their staff are prepared for flexible working.

Nicholas Tuckfield, general manager of HR specialist Talent2, said flexible working is helping improve people’s work-life balance.
