The severe snow that hit the country this winter was responsible for huge economic losses, transport secretary Philip Hammond has said.
He claimed that with transport at a standstill in many parts of the country, the deluge of snow was responsible for losses in the region of £280 million per day.
Many office spaces that were ill-prepared for the bad weather – either those without flexible working capabilities or with no contingency plan – had to close during the freezing weather.
Mr Hammond claimed that disruption to the UK’s rail network was kept to a minimum despite widespread cancellations, but added that better communication was needed in the future if passengers were to feel they hadn’t been left high and dry by train companies.
