The increased coverage of TV entrepreneurs is making more people consider setting up their own businesses.

According to new research published by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), the portrayal of entrepreneurs in the press and on television is changing the UK’s attitude towards the self-employed worker.

BIS’s latest report, entitled The Impact of Media on Entrepreneurial Intentions and Actions, shows that television programmes like Dragon’s Den, The Apprentice and The Secret Millionnaire are making people feel like they have the wherewithal to set up their own company.

Business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk said: “The media has such an important role to play in creating a positive image around entrepreneurship and starting your own business.

“We need to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, showing them the ambitions they can realise in business. The media can play a crucial role in this.”

Recently, Entrepreneur.com’s Burton Goldfield said social media was playing an increasingly important role in modern business.
