Work experience placements for young people should be much more commonplace and the government’s commitment to funding 100,000 office space placements is a step in the right direction, it has been claimed.

According to apprenticeship and work placement specialist Notgoingtouni.co.uk, the funding announcement is a “very positive move” for both business owners and young workers.

Spencer Mehlman, the website’s managing director, said letting young people get a flavour of what working in an office space is like will help guide them when they are making career choices.

“Certainly from the thousands of young people we speak to every year, a great number of them aren’t very sure of their career path,” he said.

“A lot of that is down to them never having really been in the workplace or having got a feel for what it’s like working in some of the areas they are quite interested in,” Mr Mehlman added.

In his Budget announcement, chancellor George Osborne pledged to create an additional 80,000 work experience placements – on top of the 20,000 that already exist.
