If you thought that having a paper recycling bin and turning the computers off at night was enough to make your shared offices eco-friendly, think again.

Truly green companies these days must go above and beyond the practical to prove themselves to be truly environmentally friendly, according to Paul Bartlett, who is the head of employee reward and benefit at Grassroot.

He told HR Magazine that employers should be leading the way in promoting greener ways of greener living to employees, from enrolling on cycle-to-work schemes, to providing them with equipment to make their homes just as environmentally friendly as the office.

Mr Bartlett added: “There is no doubt that a commitment to a corporate green agenda has already helped to change many employees’ ways of thinking, and to improve some of our habits, particularly regarding waste and recycling.”

Extending employee benefits schemes, empowering them to invest in green schemes and offering environmentally-supportive initiative schemes have all been suggested as ways to encourage workers to become greener.

Eco-friendly businesses can celebrate their green ways in Green Office Week next month.
