A council in the Midlands is aiming to save more than £3.5 million through the introduction of a hot desking scheme.
Sandwell Council near Wolverhampton is bringing in the measure as part of an economy drive to save £75 million over the next four years.
Nine hundred staff will move to the new BT Liberata building in West Bromwich after other offices are closed and share the office space in a hot desking initiative. The money will be saved by just running one building as opposed to five.
Deputy council leader Steve Eling said told the Express and Star: “That is going to be possible because people will share desks so we will have a much greater occupancy than we do at the moment. That will be the back end of this year.”
Other economy measures within the council include a number of redundancies.
The government announced it was slashing budgets for local councils last year in a bid to cut the UK deficit. Local authorities faced a 4.4 per cent cut this year, followed by further drops in funding over the next few years.
