Businesses based in serviced offices around the UK are being urged to turn down their air conditioning to dramatically reduce energy consumption.

The British Council for Offices (BCO) has told companies that just a minor change in the air con could lead to a reduction in consumption and cost, as many premises have the setting unnecessarily low.

Paul Edwards, chair of the BCO’s Environmental Sustainability Group, said: “Air conditioning is a major consumer of energy. If you look at the temperatures you’re controlling, ask yourself if you really need to control the room to 20 or 22 degrees. I know it doesn’t sound a lot, but a two degree difference can greatly reduce your energy consumption.”

The BCO also recently spoke out over the benefits of lighting upgrades, which could also save money and energy.

According to a Lloyds TSB survey, 30 per cent of small businesses have grown as a result of becoming greener and more environmentally sustainable.
