Female board members working in serviced offices and other buildings should rise to the heavy heights of their companies on “merit” rather than through imposed quotas, according to a recruitment firm.

Carmen Watson, managing director of Pertemps Recruitment Partnership, said that she was totally against the idea of boardroom quotas.

“That’s only because I do believe that women in the boardroom should get there on merit,” she said.

“They should be credible, they should have the skills and experience to do the role, and they should be quite firm in their conviction that that is where they want to be.”

She added that the current rate of progress to hit the targets set in Lord Davies’s report on boardroom quotas would not be met, and called for action other than quotas to achieve them.

His report revealed that FTSE 100 companies were already at 12.5 per cent of female representation on their boards, compared with just 7.8 per cent in the FTSE 250.
