In modern businesses staff are scattered all over the place, with many even mobile working from home, which is why a lot of communication takes place via the phone.

However, according to Keith Warburton, editor of Vcinsight.com, it is much more effective if firms embrace video conferencing.

Citing a study conducted at UCLA which found that up to 93 per cent of communication effectiveness is determined by non-verbal cues, he said that being able to see who you are talking to makes a real difference.

“Perhaps rather than ask whether video conferencing is desirable or effective, we should surely be asking why on earth we choose to limit ourselves to voice-only phone conversations when there are much more effective options available,” he added.

Mr Warburton went on to say that the people who get the most of teleconferences are normally those who are able to project humour and warmth into their voice, meaning even if they are just speaking on the phone, people should try and smile as it will come across on the other end of the line.
