This is according to research carried out by the Federation Against Software Theft and it also found that two thirds of office staff are unaware of the law which protects whistleblowers at work.
Protection for whistleblowing exists if you are a worker who reports a malpractice that you believe is happening, has happened or will happen in the future and the information is of an appropriate nature and you disclose it to the right person in the right way.
Half of the 24 per cent of people who said they would report a misuse of software stated a belief in good practice as their reason, with 31 per cent feeling it was important to stay within the law.
Julian Heathcote Hobbins, general counsel of FAST, said: “Not only are workers seemingly completely unaware of their rights in the workplace when it comes to doing the right thing, the worrying message that is coming out of this research is that we do not care.”
