Staff who work in serviced and shared offices may find their pay packets a little bit fuller next week as the minimum wage rate of pay increases by 15p, making it £6.08.

The change will affect 900,000 workers across the UK as the minimum wage breaks through the £6 mark for the first time.

What this means in practice is that an employee working a 40 hour week will have an extra £6 a week with a total wage of £243.20 per week.

Younger employees are also having their minimum wage increased, but by only 4p making the minimum wage for 16 and 17-year-olds £3.68 an hour.

Unions are saying that despite the increase the minimum wage is still not a living wage and the Low Pay Commission should be bolder, asking for at least £8 an hour.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said: “Cuts in public services and benefits are hitting the working poor the hardest and this increase is not enough to protect them from falling living standards.”
