Only 13 per cent of companies have protection in place against losing a key member of staff, according to research carried out by Scottish Widows.

This is despite the fact that 77 per cent of businesses could experience a major loss in profitability should a critical member of staff leave.

In comparison 27 per cent of companies are covered for the breakdown of office equipment, such as photocopiers and printers, despite employee’s talent being one of the most valuable resources a company has.

Even fewer businesses have failed to plan for the event of serious illness or death depriving them of a key member with only ten per cent of those surveyed being insured for such an occurrence.

A recent survey into office bugbears found that colleagues leaving the printer out of paper was one bad habit staff found the most annoying.

Iain McGowan, head of savings and protection at Scottish Widows, said: “In some cases, this represents a failure to plan properly or a lack of understanding of the benefits of business protection.”
