As part of its Red Tape Challenge the government has launched the Employment Law Spotlight in which it is asking employers to name the worst aspects of employment law.

By doing so they intend to scrap or amend the ones which seem to be the most prohibitive to best practice in workplaces throughout the UK.

In order for it to be effective the government must also monitor the legislation coming from Europe and any new legislation it plans to implement itself.

The Red Tape Challenge is a programme which has been undertaken by the current government to cut some of the 21,000 active regulations in the UK before it leaves office, believing that by giving people more freedom they will do the right thing.

Steve Radley, director of policy at Engineering Employers Federation, said: “Achieving culture change in Whitehall and Brussels is not easy but with growth flagging, we simply cannot wait for long-term results.”
