Businesses owners need to make sure that any employees using social media websites in the office space are wary of cyber threats.
According to internet security specialist Norton, cybercriminals are increasingly targeting social networking websites in order to exploit the trust people have in them.
Dan Nadir, senior director of consumer products at Norton said: “What we’ve noticed more recently is that cybercriminals are building threats that are designed to trick social network users.”
“The bad guys have realised that people are much more likely to trust a link or attachment that a friend or family member has sent them, and they are exploiting that trust,” he added.
He concluded that as well as affecting people’s personal finances, victims of cybercriminals can become part of the problem as their profiles can be used to infect other social network users.
In February, Norton launched its Cybercrime Index as a means of raising awareness of the issue of social media threats.
