Companies offering early retirement have been criticised for wasting leadership talent and throwing away skills and experience.

People who choose to leave work in their 50s or early 60s have also been scorned for wasting their talent in retirement, as they may find it difficult to find opportunities to show their skills once they have left the workplace, HR Magazine reported.

Nisa Chitakasen, co-founder of career consultancy Position Ignition, told the news provider: “This appears to be a dreadful waste of talent. Yet this situation happens regularly. Something changing or someone wanting to change direction leads to much talent being jettisoned.”

She commented that the problem was exacerbated by issues created by the demographic shift in the working population.

Employers have previously expressed concerns that older people who are retiring will leave a gap which younger workers do not have the skills or experience to fill.

Changes to the default retirement age, which may see people working until they are 70 or more within a few years, has also brought the issue to the fore.
